Some things about Alison Cooley

I am a writer, curator, and educator currently based in Toronto, ON. I hold a BA (Double Honours) in Art History and Studio Art from the University of Saskatchewan, and a MA in Art History with a Diploma in Curatorial Practice from York University. My research deals with the intersection of natural history and visual culture, socially engaged artistic practice, craft histories, and experiential modes of art criticism. Over the past few years, my writing has appeared in Canadian ArtKAPSULAFUSE, and the Journal of Curatorial Studies, among others. I am the 2014 co-recipient of the Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators, and the host and producer of What it Looks Like

Hire me!

I have a strong background in writing, editing, and proofreading, having worked in an editorial capacity for arts publications such as FUSE magazine and Canadian Art. I'm experienced in working collaboratively with students in educational settings to develop strong writing and argumentation, as well as with artists and organizations to craft and finesse artist statements, grant applications, project proposals and press releases.  I have experience in image research, fact-checking and background research, in both journalistic and academic settings. My topic specialties are contemporary and historical visual art and museum studies, with an emphasis on Canadian topics in particular, and an eye for the social and political implications of art and museum work. My freelance writing, which ranges from advertorial copy to feature-length essays, has appeared in numerous publications in print and online. My rates are reasonable.
